MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State soccer Head Coach
Warren Lipka announced the signing of 14 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent this week.
The 2012-13 class includes forwards
Casey Chalupny (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy),
Arianna Collins (Whitesburg, Ky./Letcher County Central HS) and
Meredith White (Richmond, Ky./Madison Central).
The midfielders include
Kelsey Gomez (Katy, Tx./Seven Lakes HS),
Karen Hilt (Lynchburg, Ohio/Lynchburg HS),
Macy Kootz (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS),
Samantha Matherly (Elizabethtown, Ky./Elizabethtown HS),
Teig Palmateer (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way North HS), and
McKenzie Ward (Hartford, Ky./Ohio County HS)
The defenders are
Kimberly Golden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin HS),
Kristi Gomez (Katy, Tex./Seven Lakes HS),
Chloé Juergensen (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township HS),
Kelsey Patera (Bristol, Wisc./Westosha Central HS), and
Kelsey Toepfer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS).
“This class will complete a huge turnover we had the past two years due to graduation,” said Lipka. “This will be a new team next year, and we will rely heavily on the past two classes to maintain the level that we have achieved here at MSU. This 2012 class will be an important part to our success.”
The diverse group hails from seven different states, including Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Texas, and has a wide range of talent and experience, according to the MSU coach.
“I look forward to getting this class on campus and preparing us for another challenging 2012 schedule,” continued Lipka.
White was honored as a two-time All-14th Region member. She also ran track and field and swam at Madison Central. White led the Lexington FC club program to regional qualifying in 2011 and has three years of Olympic Development Program (OPD) experience.
Collins tallied All-District and All-Region accolades all four years at Letcher County Central and also claimed Most Valuable Player honors at the regional tournament and All-State Honorable Mention following the 2011 season. She played club soccer with FC Alliance.
Chalupny played for one of St. Louis’ premier club teams, JB Marine, while also earning time in Missouri’s ODP throughout her high school years. She is also the sister of United States Women's National Team member and Olympic Gold Medalist Lori Chalupny.
Hilt achieved First-Team All-State honors her senior season, while also earning First-Team All-District accolades her final three years at Lynchburg. Following Hilt’s senior season, she was named Southeastern Ohio Player of the Year and played club soccer for the Kings Soccer Academy.
Kootz was named All-County, All-District and First-Team All-State in 2011 and Third-Team All-State in 2010 for Noblesville. Kootz also helped lead her Carmel United club soccer team to state championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Matherly tallied First-Team All-Area and All-Region Tournament honors in 2011 for Elizabethtown. She also led the Mockingbird Valley Soccer Club to a state championship.
Palmateer collected Most Valuable Players accolades in 2007-08 for Eclipse Select Soccer Club. She also helped lead Eclipse to a state championship in 2007 and to state runner-up status in 2011. From 2005-09, Palmateer played on the Illinois state ODP team and Region II camp.
Ward earned First-Team Academic All-State honors in 2009-11, while also being named All-District and All-Region in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She also helped lead her club team, SWISA Rush, to the 2011 Indiana State Championship. Ward has been a four-year member of the Kentucky state ODP team and was a co-captain in 2010.
Kelsey and Kristi Gomez were each named First-Team All-District in 2011 for Seven Lakes, with Kristi also tallying First-Team All-Region honors. The twin sisters helped lead Seven Lakes to a state semi-finalist showing in 2010, with each earning All-District Honorable Mention accolades in 2010. They played club soccer for the Albion Hurricanes.
While at Badin, Golden earned First-Team All-Greater Girls Cincinnati League (GGCL), First-Team All-Southwest Ohio and First-Team All-Ohio. She was also named First-Team All-Region II and has played club soccer with Hammer F.C. since 2008. Golden participated in the ODP Regional camp in 2007 and 2008 as well.
Juergensen led her club team, Sockers F.C., to the 2010 and 2011 State Cup championships in Illinois and a fifth place showing in the National Championship Series. She also helped lead her club to the 2010 Disney Showcase championship in 2010 and a finalist showing in the 2008 Manchester Cup.
While at Westosha Central, Patera tallied First-Team All-Conference accolades, while also earning Freshman All-Star and Most Valuable Player honors. She has also been the team captain for her Eclipse Select club team for the past three years and played on the 2008 Wisconsin ODP state team and region pool team.
Toepfer, sister of MSU junior
Sam Toepfer, was a four-year varsity starter for Anderson, helping lead her team to the state final four her junior season. She also guided her squad to sectional championships her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. She was named team captain during her junior and senior seasons while also being honored with multiple awards, including Most Valuable Player, following her senior season. Toepfer is a member of the Classics Hammer F.C.
Morehead State completed the 2011 season with an 11-8-3 record, marking the first time in program history MSU has tallied three straight above-.500 seasons. The Eagles finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 4-4-1 mark to advance to their sixth straight OVC Tournament.
