MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A grand slam by senior Luke Bainer highlighted an eight-run fifth inning that catapulted the Morehead State baseball team to an 18-9 win over St. Catharine Tuesday at Allen Field.

Luke Bainer’s six-RBI outing marked the greatest run-scoring production of any Eagle batter in a single game this season. The grand slam was his first of the year and his second round-tripper of 2012.

The Eagles (16-13) tallied 15 hits during the contest and five recorded multi-hit performances. Shortstop Chase Greenwell led the way by going 4-for-6 and with one run driven in. Senior Andrew Deeds entered the day ranked second nationally in hits with 53 and went 3-for-4 with a home run.

Morehead State starter Garrick Whittle lasted four innings, surrendered six earned runs and an early Eagle lead. MSU gave Whittle a four-run cushion following a five-run first inning, and the lead disappeared as the Patriots put together run-scoring innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Patriot sidearmer Chase Dial provided no relief as he was called out of the bullpen in the fifth inning. He was responsible for five Eagle runs, as he walked two, allowed two hits and took the loss.

Right-handed reliever Josh Schneider earned the win, his first of the season. He tossed three innings, allowed two earned runs, both coming on a home run, and four hits.

Second baseman Andrew Garcia provided the Patriots (27-16) offensive punch going 3-for-5, with three RBI and a home run. His long ball gave St. Catharine an early 1-0 lead in the first.

The Eagles begin a three-game road swing at Ohio Valley Conference foe SIU Edwardsville on Thursday.  First pitch is set for 7 p.m. ET.
