MARTIN, Tenn. - After earning the No. 2 seed and an automatic bye, the Morehead State soccer team is set to begin play at the OVC Soccer Championship Friday at 8 p.m. ET. The Eagles will face the winner of the No. 3 Southeast Missouri/No. 6 Austin Peay match.
MSU NOTES
• The Eagles are 3-2 against the tournament field, including a pair of wins against possible semifinal opponents Southeast Missouri/Austin Peay.
• The Morehead State soccer team had three individuals achieve the highest Ohio Valley Conference honors, which were announced Wednesday at the championship banquet. Junior forward Jade Flory was named Offensive Player of the Year, freshman forward Angela Black was tabbed Freshman of the Year and Head Coach Warren Lipka was named Co-Coach of the Year. Flory was also named First-Team All-OVC and All-Newcomer, while Black joined her on the All-Newcomer squad.
• Flory leads the OVC with five game-winning goals. She ranks second in the league in goals (13) and third in assists (5). The Chambersburg, Pa., native scored her first collegiate hat trick (three goals) in the 4-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 1. Flory has collected OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors four times this season. The Youngstown State transfer is now tied for the MSU single-season school record for game-winning goals, and ranks third in both goals and points.
• Black ranks second on the team with four goals and four assists. The St. Louis native has two game-winners to her credit. Black scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 5-2 victory over Southeast Missouri and followed it up with her second just 18 seconds later. For her efforts, Black was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week.
•The Eagles moved into the NCAA record book following the 5-2 victory over Southeast Missouri. Three MSU goals that came in 1:18 are the third fastest consectutive goals by one team in NCAA history and the fastest in OVC history.
PREVIEWING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI/AUSTIN PEAY
• Southeast Missouri enters the tournament having won four of its last five matches, but a 1-0 loss in the regular season finale at UT-Martin dropped the Redhawks from potentially being the OVC regular season champion to third place. SEMO features the OVC Defensive Player of the Year in goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon. Natasha Minor anad Erin Shulman lead the attack with four goals apiece.
•Austin Peay has lost four of its last five contests entering the postseason. The Lady Govs, feature four All-OVC honorees, including seniors Tatiana and Natalia Ariza on the first-team. Fellow senior Andy Quiceno was a second-team honoree, and freshman Gina Fabbro earned a spot oon the All-Newcomer team. Tatiana Ariza leads the OVC with 14 goals.
