NASHVILLE -- Belmont left-hander Dan Ludwig pitched a gem Saturday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park, pushing the Bruins to a 2-1 win and series sweep over the Morehead State baseball team.
The Bruins (20-6) improve to 8-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Eagles (9-17) fall to 4-8 in league play.
“They are a good club,” Head Coach Mike McGuire said. “I thought we had a chance to win every game this weekend. We just need to find a way to come through in clutch situations. We’re going to keep competing and turn this thing around.”
BU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the first on an RBI single from senior designated hitter Josh Davis.
Morehead State evened it up in the top of the second when sophomore right fielder Chris Robinson reached on an infield single and advanced to third on an errant throw, before being driven in by freshman first baseman Clark Pence.
The Bruins took the lead back in the bottom of the third when senior first baseman Judah Akers scored on an MSU throwing error.
From that point, Ludwig (6-1) took over, pitching six straight shutout innings, giving up only five hits while striking out five and walking none. Belmont senior righty Josh Davis entered in the ninth to pick up his third save of the series and eighth of the year.
MSU freshman righty Tyler Keele (2-2) went three innings, gave up six hits and two runs, one of them earned. Freshman righty Matt Anderson threw 3.2 scoreless innings out of the Eagle bullpen, allowing only one hit while striking out two.
Sophomore third baseman Kane Sweeney was the only Eagle to register multiple hits, going 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
The Eagles return to Allen Field on Wednesday for a matchup with Campbellsville (Ky.). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
