JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- The Morehead State baseball team allowed eight unanswered runs from Jacksonville State and dropped game one of its final series this season, 8-2, on Thursday night at Rudy Abbott Field.
The Gamecocks improve to 31-23 overall and 21-7 in Ohio Valley Conference action with the win, while the Eagles fall to 15-39 on the season and 9-19 in league play.
“We got off to a good start, but we struggled on the mound,” Head Coach Mike McGuire. “I thought when we got down we stopped having competitive at-bats, which is unacceptable. We’ve just got to put this one behind us and bounce back tomorrow.”
Gamecock junior left-hander Casey Antley picked up his sixth win of the season. He settled in after a rough first inning to throw seven straight shutout innings, allowing only two hits over that span. Eagle junior lefty Noah Smallwood (1-7) was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in six innings.
MSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, getting three straight singles with two outs. It was capped off by a two-run line drive to left field from freshman third baseman Alan Mocahbee, which scored sophomore right fielder Brandon Rawe and senior shortstop Chase Greenwell.
JSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the second, scoring three on a trio of hits. The frame was highlighted by a two-run homer from junior catcher Stephen Bartlett.
The Gamecocks extended their lead to 8-2 with a solo shot from senior first baseman Adam Miller in the third before junior shortstop Andrew Bishop cranked a two-run dinger as part of a four-run fourth inning.
Greenwell (3-for-4) was the only Eagle with multiple hits in the contest. He now has 26 multiple hit games this season to lead the OVC.
Due to the threat of rain on Saturday, there has been a change to the weekend schedule. The Eagles will now bring the 2013 season to a close on Friday, with a doubleheader that is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
