BOONE, N.C. – Junior Jade Flory's winner in the fifth minute of overtime helped give the Morehead State soccer team its first victory of the season Sunday as the Eagles upended Appalachian State, 2-1, at Appalachian Stadium.
MSU (1-7-1) fell behind 1-0 in the 16
th minute when Samantha Childress scored off a cross from Julia Holz. Appalachian State (3-4-0) outshot the Eagles 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes. ASU also had a 4-2 shots-on-goal advantage.
Junior midfielder Elizabeth McSparin's first goal of the season put MSU on the board in the 84
th minute. The defense kept the Mountaineers at bay for the final 6:22 of regulation, which included three ASU shots.
Flory's winner came when she broke free in the top of the box. She used the second career assist from freshman forward Angela Black to finish the match. MSU outshot the Mountaineers 9-5 in the final 50 minutes of the match, including a 7-3 advantage in the last 45 minutes of regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd had five saves, while Amy Kolowsky had four stops to lead the Mountaineers.
The Eagles open Ohio Valley Conference play Sunday at Jacksonville State at 2 p.m. ET.
