StatsMOREHEAD, Ky. - In her last match at Wetherby Gym, senior
Hannah Sigala recorded a team-high 12 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell to EKU in three sets. They lost 20-25, 21-25, 23-25.
Morehead State got off to slow starts throughout the night, but continued to fight. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get their second straight victory.
"Despite the loss, I thought our team fought well tonight," said head coach
Jaime Gordon. "It was nice to see people like
Hannah Sigala really step up. She struggled in the first two sets, but came on big for us late. We've gone through a lot of adversity, but our team is showing a lot of character. They are fighting and finding ways to get better."
Sigala did get off to a slow start, recording five attack errors before her first kill, which took place late in the first set. But, she settled in late and played extremely well the rest of the way. She finished with 12 kills, while hitting .300 for the match, and had just one error the rest of the way.
"No, I wasn't really nervous, I was excited, I just wanted to come out and put on a good show," said Sigala of her slow start. "I'm just disappointed that we couldn't pull it out for the fans tonight."
The Eagles finished the match with more kills than the Colonels, 40-29, a better hitting percentage, .147 to .130, and more digs, 42-33. But, in the end it was the errors that ultimately led to the slow starts and cost them the victory. They finished with seven service errors and Eastern Kentucky had 10 service aces.
"EKU is a good team, they didn't give us many free points tonight, and that's something that really hurt us as we gave them a lot of free points in the first two sets," said Gordon. "We had a fair number of service errors, reception errors, and a couple of unforced attacking errors."
Junior
Sydney Schuler continued her strong play, recording eight kills on just 13 swings, good for a .538 hitting efficiency.
Morehead State now turns their attention towards the regular season finale on Saturday at noon at Murray State. The Racers enter that match with just one conference loss on the season.
