MOREHEAD, Ky.--- The Morehead State soccer team (2-2) will go on the road for the first time this season and take on a pair of Mountain West teams in Wyoming (0-0-3) and Air Force (1-0). The Eagles tangle with the Cowgirls on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and face Air Force Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off of back-to-back wins against Bowling Green State (2-1) and Xavier (2-2). Freshman forward Dani Wilson scored two goals in the win over BGSU, including the game winner in the 98th minute, and was later named Adidas OVC Offensive Player of the week for her efforts.
"We just want to make sure that they understand that this is just a step forward to where we want to go," said head coach Warren Lipka. "It's good to have two wins, but we have a lot of work to do."
Lipka is not suprised about the early successes of many of his freshmen, especially Wilson.
"Dani (Wilson) is a confident player, she's an attacking minded player," said Lipka. "She would tell me to put her anywhere we want, even if it meant putting her in the back, but she really likes to score goals and that's why we have her up front."
Wilson credited her teammates for her early success.
"The biggest thing that has helped me is that the girls have been so welcoming," said Wilson. "They have accepted me and that has made the transition easier."
After two straight home wins, she believes her team is ready to continue that success on the road.
"We're really excited, getting ready for our trip to Wyoming and Air Force," she said. "I think our spirits are high and we're ready to come out and get two more wins."
According to Lipka, going on the road can be tough at times, but it's an early season challenge that he is looking forward to.
"When I played, I loved to go on the road," he said. "It's more of a controlled environment, there's more of a routine, which is a plus. We're going to play two programs that are really sharp right now and we just have to be ready to play."
The trip out west marks the second longest trip, miles-wise, in program history, second only to a 2003 excursion to Hawaii.
