NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State soccer (5-10-2, 2-5-1 Ohio Valley Conference) was unable to build on what was a two-game win streak, falling to Belmont (5-6-4, 4-2-1 OVC) by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The tone of the match was set by the Bruins just 42 seconds after the opening whistle, when Belmont freshman Anna Brock Hawkins recorded her first career goal off an assist from senior Meg Howard. The score would remain 1-0 for the rest of the half, but the Eagles were never quite able to regain momentum.
The second half saw two more goals from the home team, despite a Morehead State substitution at goalkeeper. First, Howard scored one of her own at 49:37, before Hawkins tacked on her second at 58:29. The Eagles managed nine total shots, but it wasn't enough to stop Belmont's school-record fifth straight shutout.
Ashley Ritchie and
Angela Black led the way with three shots each. Black's three attempts were the only shots by Morehead State to land on goal. Freshman Eva Ýr Helgadóttir recorded four saves and started the match at keeper, but was replaced by sophomore
Michelle Washburn at halftime. Washburn, who is nursing an ankle injury, played just over 22 minutes before returning to the sideline.
The Eagles currently stand at seventh place in the OVC, but still maintain hope for a fourth consecutive invitation to the OVC Tournament this postseason. Morehead State will play its last two matches of the regular season on the road, starting with UT Martin (4-11, 1-6 OVC) on Thurday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
