MOREHEAD, Ky. – After eight straight matches without a win, Morehead State soccer (4-9-2, 1-4-1 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated Eastern Illinois (4-9, 1-4 OVC) 1-0 on the Eagles' annual senior day at Jayne Stadium.
"They've been playing so well lately, they deserve a win," said head coach
Warren Lipka. "I'm happy for them."
Morehead State honored seniors
Angela Black,
Tonia Parisi, and
Ashley Huffine during pregame ceremonies. All three players started Sunday's match, but a lingering knee injury limited Huffine to just 24 minutes of action.
"I still think Angela is the best defender in the league," said Lipka. "Tonia stepped up for us today. She was steady, and she got the job done."
The Eagles' game-winning goal came by way of an Eastern Illinois own goal at 48:44. A cross from Parisi to freshman
Ashley Ritchie was disrupted in the Panthers' box, eventually leading to a misdirected clear from an Eastern Illinois defender.
Ritchie and sophomore
Cara Maher each had four shot attempts, while freshman
Morgan Treser added three of her own. Sophomore goalkeeper
Michelle Washburn made her first start since an 11-save performance in Morehead State's Aug. 19 season opener at Illinois. The 5-foot-9 Georgetown, Ky. native recorded six saves off 13 shots from Eastern Illinois.
"Michelle made a couple big saves for us," Lipka said. "She's been here before. She's played a lot of games for us."
Morehead State will conclude its 2016 home slate when Jacksonville State (5-8-1, 2-3 OVC) visits Jayne Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. ET. The Eagles have won two of the past three contests in the head-to-head series.
