EMERSON, Ga. -- Junior first baseman
Jesus Carrera delivered a one-out, walk-off single to score two and propel Morehead State Baseball to a 2-1 win over Arkansas State Friday at the Perfect Game Complex.
The Eagles, who only trailed 1-0 due to a pair of bunt singles by the Red Wolves, improved to 4-1 overall. ASU slipped to 2-3.
Sophomore second baseman
Braxton Morris singled to lead off the ninth inning, while junior leftfielder
Michael Patrick drew a walk. Freshman catcher
Hunter Fain laid down a sacrifice bunt to push runners into scoring position. Following a walk to pinch hitter
Tyler Niemann, Carrera lifted the first pitch from Red Wolf reliever Tanner Ring down the left field line just far enough to allow Morris and Patrick to score.
"It was a great pitcher's duel, and deservedly both starters got no-decisions as they both pitched extremely well and didn't deserve a loss," said Head Coach
Mike McGuire. "When you get great pitching, you always give yourself a chance to win offensively, and that's what we did. For some reason, It has been hard to score runs at this complex for us, so we just kept battling."
MSU reliever
Cable Wright surendered just one hit and struck out three in the final two innings to improve to 1-0. ASU's J.D. Miller put the tying and winning runs on base and was charged with the loss to slip to 1-1. MSU starter
Luke Humphreys fanned three and allowed just five hits in seven innings of work. Red Wolf hurler Tyler Zuber struck out five in seven frames.
Arkansas State grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the seventh when Ring and Greg Rucker delivered bunt singles following an inning-opening walk to Austin Baker.
In his first action after returning from a pre-season injury, Patrick, a transer from Winthrop, went 2-for-2. The Eagles had seven hits compared to six for ASU.
Morehead State continues play in the College Spring Swing Tournament at Perfect Game Saturday versus Omaha. A doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. ET.
