MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Playing on a rain-soaked field, the Morehead State baseball team could not generate any momentum Saturday and fell 6-2 in its series finale versus Austin Peay.
The Eagles fell to 26-19 overall and 12-9 in the OVC, while the Govs moved to 26-16 overall and 16-8 in the conference. MSU still won the series over the Govs for the third straight year, picking up two Friday victories.
One big inning proved to be the difference maker as the visitors scores four times in the fifth and held the Eagles to solo runs in the fifth and eighth via a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
"We didn't get enough quality at-bats, and that's been our problem when we fall behind this year," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "I thought (starting pitcher) Aaron (Leasher) pitched pretty well, but he got himself in trouble again with too many free bases."
The sophomore lefty Leasher (5-2) struck out 11 in six innings and only surrendered three hits in six frames, but he walked five and hit two batters. He walked a batter, hit the next, and then caused trouble for himself with a throwing error to start the APSU half of the fifth.
Junior third baseman
Alex Stephens, who was 2-for-4, doubled and came around to score when he beat out the catcher's tag on a wild pitch in the fifth. Junior centerfielder
Ryan Kent reached on a error to start the eighth and scored on sophomore leftfielder
Tyler Niemann's sac fly.
Caleb Powell (5-2) picked up the win for Austin Peay, allowing just four hits and one run in six innings on the hill.Â
Morehead State returns to action on Tuesday with a home contest versus Ohio set for 5 p.m. ET.
