MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State soccer (3-6-1) fell to Austin Peay (6-4) by a 1-0 deficit to open Ohio Valley Conference play at Jayne Stadium on Thursday night.
"We're a couple steps away from being a pretty good team," said head coach
Warren Lipka. "We're there, but it's going to take effort, passion, and a desire to get that stuff that we need."
Morehead State ended the first half with six shot attempts to Austin Peay's five, but the Governors scored the game's only goal just 13:14 after the opening whistle.
"I thought we responded well," said Lipka. "It's just another page of growing with a new group, new players."
The Eagles' defense stood its ground in the second half, paving way for a late-game counterattack from sophomore
Haley Best. The 5-foot-3 Milford, Ohio native made her way to the Austin Peay penalty area without a goalie in net, but her potential game-tying shot attempt was blocked by the traffic in front of her with 2:26 remaining.
"We've got to (score) when we get a chance, an opportunity," said Lipka. "You can't play not to win."
Despite the loss, the eighth-year head coach was pleased with the performance of senior
Angela Black, who has spent time at multiple positions for the Eagles this season.
"
Angela Black was all over the field tonight," Lipka said. "(She) was the best player on the field, on both teams."
Morehead State will continue OVC play when the Eagles travel to Murray, Ky. on Sunday, Sept. 25 to face the Murray State Racers (1-4-1) at 2 p.m. ET.
"You've just got to keep fighting," said Lipka. "We've got more games to play."
Sunday's match will be broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
