Soccer falls short on road, returns home for four matches

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. – Morehead State soccer traveled 70 miles down I-64 for a battle with Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, but left EKU Soccer Field on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat.

"We played a team today that has played with confidence," said Eagles head coach Warren Lipka. "They've got some wins under their belt, and they're showing it."

Morehead State (3-8-1, 0-3 Ohio Valley Conference) attempted 12 of its 15 shots in the second half, but landed only four attempts on goal. Ashley Ritchie and Samantha Damante led the way with four shots each, while freshman goalkeeper Eva Ýr Helgadóttir recorded eight saves off 22 shots from the Colonels.

"Ashley Ritchie worked her butt off to try to go create some things," Lipka said. "Somebody's got to step up and take ownership in the team that they want to be successful."

Eastern Kentucky earned its first win over the Eagles since 2012. In a head-to-head series that has been historically dominated by Morehead State, the all-time record now stands at 8-3-2.

"We're young," said Lipka. "You've got to play every match like it's your last match. You've got to play every second like it's your last second."

The Eagles will return home Sunday, Oct. 2 for the first installment of a four-game home stand. Morehead State will take on Tennessee Tech (6-4-1, 2-0 OVC) at 1 p.m. ET. Sunday's match will be broadcast live on the OVC Digital Network.
