MOREHEAD, Ky. – After ending a historic nine-game win streak by suffering its first loss since Nov. 30, Morehead State women's basketball (14-4, 4-1 Ohio Valley Conference) looks to bounce back versus Belmont (13-5, 5-0 OVC) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Last Wednesday, the Eagles left Tennessee State on the wrong end of a 69-66 decision that concluded in unusually dramatic fashion. Morehead State was down 68-58 with under 40 seconds to go, but stormed back to a two-point deficit with a chance to tie or take the lead with a hair over 13 seconds remaining.
A missed floater from
Brianna McQueen, mistimed final buzzer sound from the scorer's table, and an official game-ending whistle later, the Eagles walked away with their first conference loss of the season. The contest marked the first time in 2016-17 that Morehead State has lost when totaling less turnovers (19) than its opponent (25), when the score was tied at halftime (33-33), and when the game's outcome was decided by a single-digit difference.
The Eagles head into the weekend led by junior forward
Eriel McKee, who averages 11.5 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game. Redshirt-senior Brianne McQueen spearheads the MSU scoring attack, logging 11.9 points per outing, and shooting over 83 percent from the free throw line. Redshirt-sophomore
Darianne Seward – who has started the last seven games at point guard after joining the team in December – totes a team-high 6.3-assist-per-game average.
Belmont is coming off a 74-58 win over Eastern Kentucky, marking its 11th victory in the Bruins' last 12 games. Saturday's contest will be the first leg of a men's and women's doubleheader at Johnson Arena, broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
