HOOVER, Ala. – The Morehead State Baseball team won for the fourth straight time Saturday, shaking off a five-error game in the field to top Alabama State 7-5, at the Hoover Met Stadium.
Â
The Eagles moved to 5-2, while the Hornets slipped to 1-6.
Â
"We are fortunate to win today," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "We made way too many errors, and I realize that physical errors will happen, but we booted it around too much to beat a really good team. I did feel like that once we got a lead, the only way we were going to lose is to beat ourselves."
Â
Morehead State pitchers
Curtis Wilson,
Dom Masullo,
David Calderon and
Cable Wright only surrendered one earned run, but it took a wild pitch and a two-run single by junior second baseman
Braxton Morris in the sixth for the Eagles to grab the lead for good.
Â
Morris was 2-for-4, while senior rightfielder
Will Schneider also went 2-for-4. True freshman Masullo, who entered in the fifth and did not allow a run over 1.2 frames, collected his first career win, while Wright nailed down the final four outs for his second save in 2017.
Â
The Eagles vaulted on top 3-0 in the first via an RBI double by sophomore leftfielder
Niko Hulsizer and a two-run double off the wall by sophomore DH
Trevor Snyder.
Â
Alabama State capitalized on three MSU errors in the third to knot the game 3-3. Following Morris' heroics in the sixth, the Hornets scored twice more via an error in the eighth. Sophomore third baseman
Jake Hammon plated the final run when he singled home Schneider in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
"
Curtis Wilson had to throw an extra 25 pitches because of some miscues or else he probably could have gone into the sixth or seventh inning, and I thought
Dom Masullo really went after some guys today and pitched well."
Â
Morehead State closes the Hoover Classic on Sunday versus Big 10 foe Iowa at 1 p.m. ET.
