OXFORD, Ala. – Niko Hulsizer and
Will Schneider each hit two-run home runs for the Morehead State baseball team Friday, but the Eagles' rally came up just short in an 8-6 setback to Tennessee Tech in the winner's bracket final at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Â
Hulsizer's blast came in the seventh inning, and it allowed him to tie the OVC and Morehead State single-season record for round-trippers with 26. It also vaulted him back into the national Division I lead, one ahead of Eastern Kentucky's Ben Fisher. That smash brought MSU to within 8-4.
Â
Schneider connected on a two-run clout in the top of the ninth off Tech's All-OVC closer Ethan Roberts.
Â
But, before all that the Golden Eagles scored seven of their eight runs in the first four innings and eventually took advantage of four Morehead State errors.
Â
"We didn't have our best effort today," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "We really did not get a great start on the mound, and it was tough to come back from."
Â
Curtis Wilson surrendered seven hits and five total runs in the first 2.2 innings to fall to 4-4. Wilson had thrown on Wednesday, nailing down the Eagles' first win.
Â
Bright spots did include senior lefty
Cable Wright and freshman right-hander
Dom Masullo, who combined to hold Tech to one run while striking out seven in the final 4.2 frames.
Â
At the plate, Morehead State finished with 10 hits as junior third baseman
Eli Boggess had three and upped his national-best batting average to .429. Schneider and junior first baseman
Tyler Niemann notched two hits.
Â
Morehead State will face either Belmont or Murray State at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday. If the Eagles win, they'll face Tennessee Tech again in what would be the first championship game at 5 p.m.
