OXFORD, Ala. – The Morehead State baseball team split a pair of games at Jacksonville State Saturday, falling 10-3 in the doubleheader opener before responding with an 11-8 victory in the nightcap.
Â
The win secured the third consecutive 30-win campaign for MSU Baseball, moving the Eagles to 30-17 overall and 14-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Â
"I thought we responded well after not really having many quality at-bats or pitching in game one," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "We don't really put 30 as an emphasis each year, but certainly it's a testament to our players and especially the guys who been in this program for three or four years now. It's a great mark to be at, but we definitely have a lot more to accomplish this season."
Â
In the victory, the Eagles jumped out a 3-0 cushion before JSU even batted and led 7-2 after four frames. Freshman righthander
Jake Ziegelmeyer (3-1) got his first career conference start and only surrendered one earned run in five innings. Senior lefty
Curtis Wilson, who typically starts game three of OVC series, came out of the bullpen to nail down the final 12 outs and register his first career save.
Â
At the plate, the Eagles pounded out 15 hits, including four by the OVC's top hitter, junior third baseman
Eli Boggess. Senior rightfielder
Will Schneider cranked a two-run homer among his two hits, and sophomore DH
Trevor Snyder tallied four RBI, including three on a bases-clearing double to make it a 10-5 Eagle lead in the sixth. He also nailed an RBI double in the fourth inning.
Â
Sophomores
Reid Leonard and
Niko Hulsizer each totaled three hits.
Â
In the opener, Morehead State also grabbed a 3-0 lead, this time in the fourth inning, but a JSU grand slam in the bottom of the frame opened the door for the Gamecocks' scoring barrage.
Â
Junior lefty
Aaron Leasher recorded nine strikeouts but also issued five walks and fell to 6-3.
Â
Snyder also led the offense, garnering two hits.
Â
The teams will wrap up the league set on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
