MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State men's golf head coach
Matthew Martin announced that six future Eagles have signed to join the men's golf program in 2024, marking the largest signing class in eight years for the program. Three members of the class are from the state of Kentucky.
"I am extremely excited to welcome these six young men to our program," said Martin. "This will be our largest incoming class since 2016. Each of them have shown the potential to contribute a great deal on and off the golf course. They all bring something a little different with their golf games and backgrounds, but will soon be united as Eagles! We will need them to work hard upon their arrival so they are ready to compete for playing time early in each of their careers."
Gavin Augenstein, the lone Ohioan in the 2024 class, comes to Morehead State from Springboro, Ohio, where he played for head coach Justin Martin at Springboro High School. During his career, he has led the Greater Southwest Ohio Conference in 9-hole average three times while being named to the Golfweek Junior Tour twice. He is a three-time GWOC Conference Champion and two-time Ohio SW Sectionals Champion, with a pair of top ten finishes at the Ohio D1 State Championship.
"Gavin brings a wealth of experience in some high level events, including an impressive finish in the Ohio State tournament at the very difficult OSU Scarlet Course. He is just as committed to excellence in the classroom as he is on the course, and will be entering our space systems engineering program," said Martin.
Seamus (Shay-mus) Bogan, a native of Clover, South Carolina, comes to the Eagle program after an impressive high school & junior golf career. Bogan currently plays for Gaston Day School under head coach Troy Carter. While his senior season has yet to be determined, he brings individual and team success to Morehead State, with Gaston Day School coming into 2024 as back-to-back state champions. As an individual, Bogan is a two-time First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-State player, winning the state championship as an individual during his sophomore season with a runner-up finish as a junior. His father, Jeffrey Bogan, was a two-sport athlete at the Division I level at Northern Illinois while he was in college.
"Seamus comes from the Carolinas with high-level experience and a tremendous high school resume. He will add to that resume this spring and will come in ready to compete from the start. He plans to go through our space science program."
Mitchell Gastright is from Lakeside Park, Ky., and comes to Morehead State from Covington Catholic High School. During his career, he improved his 18-hole average from an 82 as a freshman to a school record 74 during his senior season. Covington Catholic won the Northern Kentucky Conference three times during his career, while Gastright was named Second-Team All-7th Region as a sophomore and First-Team All-Seventh Region as a junior and senior. During his senior season, Gastright was named the 7th Region's Player of the Year, and the Lexington City Junior Champion with rounds of 70 and 71.
"Mitchell has improved dramatically over the course of his high school career and posted some impressive rounds during his senior year," said Martin. "His game has the potential to transition easily to the collegiate level."
Andrew Johnson is the lone West Virginia native in the class, coming to MSU with championship pedigree from Winfield High School, where he played for head coach Dean Bowers. As a team, the Generals won four Region IV titles, three Cardinal Conference titles, and a State Championship during his time there. As an individual, Johnson was named All-State twice, All-Cardinal Conference three times, and was the runner up at the West Virginia State AA Championship as a senior. During his sophomore year, Johnson was the 2021 West Virginia Junior Amateur Champion (14-15).
"Andrew joins us from across the border in West Virginia," said Martin. "He has enjoyed success at the high school level individually and with his team, including a state championship. His game has an incredibly high ceiling and will be a wonderful addition to our program."
Jace Patrick, a native of Winchester, Ky., comes to MSU after four successful years at George Rogers Clark High School under coach Brandon Franklin. As an individual, Patrick posted 13 top-five finishes during his career with four wins, including two at the Northern Kentucky Junior Championship. He posted a season-best competitive score under par in all four years as a Cardinal, with a career-low of 67 during his senior year. GRC placed second in both the regional and semi-state tournaments during his senior year, with a sixth place finish at the state tournament. His father Anthony played football collegiately at Union (Ky.).
"Jace continues to improve his game and comes from one of the best high school golf programs in the state of Kentucky," said Martin. "The foundation of his golf game is extremely sound and will allow him to compete at this level."
Last but certainly not least, Clifton Scully of Berea, Ky., comes to Morehead State after rewriting the record book at Madison Southern High School under coach Andrew Farmer. As a freshman, he became the first player in school history to qualify for the state tournament, doing so all four years. After setting the school scoring record as a freshman, Scully went on the break his own record two more times as a junior and senior, and was named Second-Team All-Region during his senior season. As a junior, Scully set the record for individual wins at Madison Southern as well.
"Clifton has shattered the record book at Madison Southern, and there is no doubt his best golf is in front of him. His length will make the transition to college golf smooth for him.
