MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State volleyball made its only tune-up match before the regular season begins a successful one Saturday, as the Eagles topped visiting Miami (Ohio) 3-1 in an exhibition match at Johnson Arena.
The Eagles, under second-year head coach
Kyrsten Becker-McBride, were able to get all 16 roster players into the match. MSU rallied to win set one, 26-24, dropped set two 25-18 but returned to win 25-17, 25-16.
MSU held advantages in kills, digs, assists, and blocks. Junior outside hitter
M.E. Hargan led the offense with 13 kills, while redshirt junior middle
Sydney Wyman saw her first action in more than a year after missing last season with injuries. She had 11 kills and hit .409.
Wyman was just happy to be back out on the court with her team.
"Last year did not go at all how I wanted it to, but my teammates have been very supportive," she said. "I am blessed to back out on the court and to be able to work out this summer and be back with the team. Today I felt the team showed a lot of versatility. Everyone was playing a lot of different positions, and there was a lot of nerves, but we came together and boosted each other up. That really led to our success."
On the defensive side, senior libero
Peighton Isley - who had more than 500 digs last fall - picked up where she left off with 26 digs. Leading returning blocker
Irene Wogenstahl, now a graduate student, had a solid game at the net once again with five blocks. Sophomore middle
Amelia Nott also had five blocks as the Eagles combined for 11 rejections.
Graduate setter
Brenna Bommer posted a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs, while fellow setter
Sydney Sennett, now in her second year, had 20 helpers.
The Eagles have another week of preparations before the season opener on Aug. 30 against nationally-ranked Western Kentucky at UK's Memorial Coliseum. Match time that is 4 p.m. ET.
