MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Beach Volleyball split its two opening day matches for OVC weekend No. 2 at Giovanni's Breadstick Beach Friday. The Eagles fell to UT Martin 4-1 to open the day but rallied to beat Eastern Illinois 4-1 in the day's final match.
MSU remains in second place in the league race at 6-2 and is 13-9 overall now.Â
In the EIU win, the Panthers lunged into a 1-0 lead with a three-set triumph at No. 4, but
Hollan Everett and
Courtney Fitzgerald matched that with a three-set win at No. 5 (21-19, 11-21, 15-13).
The Eagles then coasted to three straight-set victories to clinch the match. At No. 1,
Bella Marita and
Irene Wogenstahl improved to 7-1 in conference battles by winning 21-14, 21-7. On court three,
Peighton Isley and
M.E. Hargan took their opponents down 21-17, 22-20 before
Sarah Heath and
Sydney Wyman persevered for a 21-18, 21-13 winner on court two.
In the morning setback, Wogenstahl and Marita denied the Skyhawks the 5-0 sweep as they won 25-23, 21-16. Isley and Hargan put up the toughest opposition but still fell 21-16, 21-18.
Morehead State closes out the regular season with matches against Lindenwood at Noon ET and first-place Chattanooga at 6 p.m. Saturday.
