Morehead, Ky. -- The Morehead State men's golf team placed third in a field of 15 teams in the Irish Creek Collegiate at the Irish Creek Golf Club in Kannapolis, N.C., Tuesday.
The tournament over the 7334-yard, par 70 course was shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rains on Monday. The Eagles led after the first round by four over Marquette. Tuesday's final round was sunny and drier and Marquette put on a furious charge to take the tournament victory.
Morehead state posted scores of 280-290 for a 570 (+10) total. Marquette followed up their opening round 284 with a 271 on Tuesday for a 555 (-5) total.
Remy Stalcup led the Eagles, shooting rounds of 69-70 for a one-under total of 139, good for a tie for sixth place in the field of 100 players.
"This was a good event for the team," said Eagle head coach
Matthew Martin. "Remy was outstanding, and Nolan (Piazza) was just a few putts away from being at the top of the leaderboard himself."
Piazza went 68-73-141 (+1), and a T8 finish.
Gavin Augenstein toured the Irish Creek course in 73-72-145 (+5) and finished T21.
Seamus Bogan posted rounds of 70-76-146 (+6), T28.
Logan McCormick had scores of 75-76-154 (+11) to place T58, and
Mitchell Gastright, playing in his first collegiate team competition, posted 79-75-154 (+14), T 77.
The tournament medalist was Marquette's Vinny Cervantes who fired a 64 Tuesday after posting 72 on Monday for a 136 (-4) total.
The Eagles will wrap up their schedule next Monday in the Carpenter-Chaney Classic at the Country Club of Paducah.
"We'll work hard this week to prepare for the Carpenter Chaney Classic next week, and build toward the OVC Championship," said Martin.
The Ohio Valley Conference Championship will be held at the Dalhousie Country Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo., April 20-23.
