Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State freshman utilityman
Caden Sheridan has been named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Sheridan started and appeared in 52 of the Eagles' 53 games played this season. Primarily a catcher, he played five different positions for MSU this Spring (catcher, first base, right field, center field and second base). He was also the designated hitter for seven games.
"Caden came in here as a catcher, but injuries and circumstances meant we had to scramble the lineup. He's a guy who excelled at every position we plugged him in," said Morehead State head coach
Chris Rose.
"He proved to everybody that he's just a baseball player," said Rose. "He played all over in the field and we had him all up and down the lineup. He ended up hitting leadoff for the last 15 games of the season and all he did all season was produce in whichever slot we put him in."
Sheridan hit .265 on the season with five home runs and 32 runs driven in. His 14 doubles were ranked T-6 in the OVC and led all freshmen in the conference. Sheridan not only got it done at the plate, but he also excelled behind the plate, throwing out 12 would-be base stealers which tied for fifth-most in the OVC.
"Even though he is a freshman, he is a leader in just how he plays the game," said Rose. "He just put his head down and played as hard as he could every day from the start of fall camp to last weekend."
"He was one of the three guys in the mix for the Freshman of the Year award, and the voting was close," added Rose. "I can't wait to see how he leads this program through the rest of his career here at Morehead State."
A native of Thornville, Ohio, Sheridan came to Morehead State from Sheridan High School. His senior season he hit .471 with five home runs, 13 doubles and 27 runs batted in, winning the Johnny Bench award as the best catcher in the state and was an All-Ohio selection. He is also the high school state record-holder in Ohio with a 40-game hit streak.
