Morehead, Ky-- The Morehead State volleyball team got back in the gym Wednesday in their first practice of the 2025 season. The Eagles are returning to the court after a 2024 campaign where they posted an 18-15 overall record, a 12-6 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference and a trip to the NCAA Tournament..
Similar to the way they opened the 2024 season, the Eagles open the 2025 slate with tough competition at the Cardinal Classic hosted by the preseason 4
th-ranked Louisville Cardinals. MSU will open with St. John's on August 29, Auburn on August 30, and host Louisville on August 31.
"We're doing it again in the pre-conference," said head coach
Kyrsten Becker-McBride. "What we want is be good in November. Our pre-conference schedule is about learning lessons and playing teams that are different than what we see in the conference and some who are the same."
"I thought it was really fitting last year that we started the season with a top-10 team (Kentucky) and we ended with a top-10 team (Pittsburgh, in the NCAA Regionals)," Becker-McBride said.
It's a short camp from the first practice until the opener on August 29. Becker-McBride said the experience returning from last season helps and also the team has already spent a decent amount of time together. "Our ability to have our team come to summer school means a lot. One of our newer players said today that she already feels comfortable playing with this team," she said. "Obviously that's voluntary and on their own, but it such a critical piece that 12 of them were able to be here this summer and be around each other because we do have new pieces. And our players are able to take care of integrating the new players into the team."
Becker-McBride said the program's culture leads in the integration process. "I think that you recruit great people, they're happy and they like how things are done, and they want that to continue."
Morehead State will host Eastern Kentucky in an open scrimmage in Johnson Arena on August 23. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m. ET. The Eagles' home opener will be September 5 at 10:00 a.m. in the opener of the Comfort Inn-vitational in Johnson Arena.
