OVC Co-Leader TSU Next Up for the Eagle Men

MOREHEAD, Ky. --  Morehead State Men's Basketball is getting ready to host Ohio Valley Conference co-leader Tennessee State. The contest is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Morehead State has won six straight home games against Tennessee State. Overall, the Eagles still lead the series 49-40 but Tennessee State has claimed the last two meetings after MSU won nine straight in the head-to-head since 2020-21.

TSU edged Southern Indiana on Thursday and is 17-8 overall and 11-4 in the league, tied atop the leaderboard with UT Martin.

NOTABLE
George Marshall, Jr., scored a career-high 29 points in the first meeting with the Tigers, including the game-tying three-pointer to send it overtime. But, MSU fell 105-100 in an epic extra-period contest in Nashville Jan. 15. Jon Carroll scored a career-high 22 points.

• MSU is 18-7 at home under head coach Jonathan Mattox in his two seasons. In the past five seasons, MSU boasts a 58-12 (.828) record in Johnson Arena.

• MSU ranks No. 1 in the OVC in games decided by five points or less. The Eagles have been in 10 of those games this season, going 7-3. MSU has also been in three additional contests decided by 6-8 points. TSU is 5-2 in games with a five-or-less point margin.

• MSU has won 41 straight games when its opponent scores 60 or less, since falling to No. 23-ranked Murray State on Feb. 12, 2022.

• MSU has made 42 of the last 50 free throws in the past three games, shooting 84 percent at the stripe in that span.

Jon Carroll is 33-of-40 (.825) at the free throw line in the last nine games. He is also 26-of-42 (.619) from the field in the past five games.

George Marshall, Jr., scored nine points at SEMO on Feb. 5 and reached 1,000 career collegiate points. He now has 1,122 career points. It marks the fifth straight season an Eagle reached 1,000 career college points during the season.

Jon Carroll ranks second in the conference in offensive rebounds per game (3.3). He has 10 games where he's grabbed 4+ offensive boards.

Chase Dawson and Davion Cunningham have both now eclipsed 800 career collegiate points. Dawson (871) Cunningham (851) each reached or exceeded the 800 threshold vs. Western Illinois Jan. 22.

Vince Dawson III, known to the team as "Trip", leads MSU by hitting 42 percent from "trip" range - three-point range. Dawson also tied his career-high with seven rebounds at UT Martin.

• Morehead State's non-starters average 31.0 points per game, second in the OVC. That also ranks 32nd in Division I.

• The Eagles never trailed against Tennessee Tech on Jan. 12, marking the second game this season never relinquishing a lead and the first against a Division I opponent.

Tamaury Releford leads MSU, hitting 63 percent of his field goal attempts.

• In conference games, MSU ranks second in the league in free throw percentage at .757.

• MSU owns six wins this year where it trailed at halftime. That's the most wins trailing after 20 minutes in the past six seasons.

• The Eagles boast an 10-3 record this season when they make more free throws than the opponent.

• MSU had shot 40 percent or better in 15 straight games - until hitting just 37 percent at UT Martin Feb. 7.

• MSU ranks second in the OVC in assist/turnover ratio at 1.15 - that's just .01 points behind leader Lindenwood at 1.16.
