Women's Hoops to Host Tennessee State Saturday

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State returns to action Saturday when they host Tennessee State in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network with Tom Lewis and Drew Barnette on the call. It can also be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin describing the action.
 
Morehead State is coming off a 61-58 loss to Tennessee Tech Thursday in Johnson Arena. Landon Forbes led the Eagles with 18 points. She shot six of ten from the floor and hit five of her seven three-point attempts. Kate Dike and Violet McNece added 11 apiece for MSU.
 
TTU's Reagan Hurst lead all scorers with 21 points. Reghan Grimes posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Morehead State shot 38% from the floor and 36% from three-point range.  The Eagles hit just six of their 11 free throws. TTU hit 38% from the floor and 35% from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles hit 18 of 22 from the free throw line.
 
Tennessee State fell to Southern Indiana 81-55 Thursday night in Evansville. Xai Whitfield led the Tigers with 16 points. Erin Martin added 11 for the Tigers, who shot 35% from the floor and just 1-14 from beyond the arc. TSU went 16-20 from the free throw line.
 
Southern Indiana had four players finish in double figures led by Ali Saunders with 19. The Screaming Eagles outrebounded TSU 53-32. USI had 21 offensive rebounds and scored 31 second chance points.
 
USI forced 24 TSU turnovers leading to 26 points off turnovers for the Screaming Eagles.
 
Morehead State lost to Tennessee State 70-62 January 15 in Nashville. Laura Toffali led the Eagles with 19 points and Kate Dike added 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Tennessee State was led by Aaniya Webb with a season-high 29 points. Webb shot nine of 16 from the floor, including four of nine from three-point range. She also hit all seven of her free throw attempts. Erin Martin added 13 for the Tigers.
 
Tennessee State hit 50% from the floor and 47% (7-15) from beyond the three-point line. The Eagles shot just 36% (21-59) from the floor and 7-31 (23%) from distance.

  • Morehead State averages 61.5 points per game in Ohio Valley Conference play, ranking sixth in the OVC. The Eagles rank second in the OVC allowing 60.2 points per game in league games.
  • Morehead State hit 76% from the free throw line in its last eight games. On the season, the Eagles have hit 70.1%; in league play MSU is hitting free throws at a 73.3% rate.
  • Landon Forbes hit 17-19 (89.5%) from the line in the last eight games. Laura Toffali hit 29 of 38 (76.3%)

She has scored in double figures in the last three straight games. She tied her career-high of 18 points in both games last week. Her 26 made treys in conference play rank eighth in the OVC.
  • McNece has recorded 15 blocked shots this season, ranking 15th in the OVC.
  • Thursday night against Tennessee Tech, for the second straight Thursday, Landon Forbes posted 18 points. Playing a season-high 37:23 in the absence of Sepp, she hit six of 10 from the floor and hit her first five threes, finishing five of seven.
  • Forbes has dished out 49 assists in conference games. Her 3.27 assists per game rate in league games ranks fifth in the OVC. Her 1.53 assists to turnovers ratio in league play leads the OVC.
  • Forbes has recorded 33 steals in conference play, the sixth-most in the OVC. She has 49 steals this season, which is also the sixth highest total in the league.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
 
Tennessee State is coached by former WNBA star Candace Depree, who is in her second season at the helm in Nashville. She has a record of 12-34 at TSU. Against Morehead State, Dupree is 2-1.
 
Tennessee State averages 60.1 points per game in conference games, ranking eighth in the OVC. Defensively, the Tigers average allowing 72.6 points per game in conference play, the most in the OVC.
 
The Tigers haven't taken many three-pointers so far in league play; their 244 attempts are the third-fewest in the OVC. TSU ranks third in the conference with a 32.4% accuracy from distance (79 244). TSU has totaled 50 blocked shots in league play, the second-most in the OVC.
 
  • Aaniya Webb leads the Tigers averaging 11.4 points per game (19th in the OVC). She has been deadly to Morehead State the last two times the schools have met: She poured in a career-high 29 January 15 in Nashville. Last season, she missed the first contest between MSU and TSU. She posted 26 points against the Eagles last February 25 in Nashville.  Last Saturday against Western Illinois in Nashville, she dropped 24 points hitting seven of 13 from the floor while hitting five of her nine three-point shots.
  • Xai Whitfield leads TSU averaging 10.9 points in conference games. In league play, she's hitting 44% from the floor and 47% from three-point range, while hitting 79% from the free throw line.
