Morehead, Ky-- In a game between the two leaders in the Ohio Valley Conference in home runs, it figured to be a high-scoring affair when Morehead State and SIUE got together. The teams combined for 13 home runs and SIUE slugged its way to a 23-8 win over MSU Friday in the series opener at Sonny Allen Field at Prefontaine Park.
Â
SIUE (9-13, 1-0 OVC) got a run in the top of the first conventionally, then blew it out in the top of the second. After the first two Cougars struck to start the inning, SIUE batters smacked four home runs on the way to a nine-run inning and never looked back.
Â
Morehead State (10-12, 0-1 OVC) scored twice in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
Jaden Correa got the Eagles on the board in the second with his seventh home run of the season, this one a two-run shot out to right center.
Â
Aubrey Kearns and
Caden Sheridan smacked back-to-back two-out solo homers in the third. In the fifth, Kearns delivered again with a two-run homer over the screen in center field.
Â
The Eagles got their last two runs in the seventh.
Davis Germann led off with a sharp single through the left side. Sheridan and
Nick Griffith both drew consecutive one-out walks to load the bases. MSU's
Ian McCubbin drove a ball off the fence in right center, scoring Germann from third.
Â
Austyn Peak, running for Sheridan at second base, stopped at third base. Griffith running from first base, was caught in a rundown between second and third bases eluding a tag by the SIUE shortstop. Griffith returned to second safely, but McCubbin was caught trying to return to first and was thrown out. Peak scored on the throw for the final margin.

SIUE starter Tim Teixiera (2-3) picked up the win. MSU starter
Landon Waugh (0-4) took the loss.
