Cleveland State Comes to Morehead for Non-Conference Soccer Clash

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Soccer looks to bounce back from a 2-1 loss at Miami (Ohio) as the Eagles welcome Cleveland State to MSU Soccer Field on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+. 

The Eagles last faced Cleveland State in Cleveland, Ohio, marking the first meeting between the two programs in school history, with Morehead State ultimately falling 3-0.

Morehead State Head Coach Paul Cox aims for a bounce back following last season's face off. 

"It's a game that we want to redeem ourselves from 12 months ago," said Cox. "We want to protect our home turf and have a solid game plan to win the game."

Morehead State is coming off a 2-1 loss to Miami in Oxford, Ohio. The Eagles were held in check offensively, only registering four total shots throughout the contest. 

Sophomore Charlotte Lee recorded the first goal of her collegiate career, finding the back of the net on a free kick in the first half. Lee's goal marked the fourth point she's recorded in the first three games of the season. 

Cleveland State enters the match with an 0-3 record, suffering losses to Kent State, Eastern Kentucky and Duquesne. The Vikings have yet to find the back of the net this season and have been outscored 11-0, despite being outshot by just a 34-27 margin.

The Vikings finished last season with a 4-6-7 record and are led by Head Coach Mark Sappington, who enters his third season at the helm. Sappington is familiar with the Eagle program, having served as assistant coach here in 2022 and 2023.

MSU is 1-0 at home this season and 4-6-1 on its own field since the start of 2025. The Blue and Gold has not allowed a goal in its last two home outings. CSU is 0-2 on the road this year and last won a game away from home August 17, 2025, 2-0 at Southern Indiana.

MSU goes back on the road for a Thursday tilt at Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff is 4 p.m. The Eagles will return home to play the third of four straight Sunday contests on the MSU Soccer Field, when it faces Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m.

NOTABLE 

  • Charlotte Lee scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the Eagles recent match against Miami (Ohio)
  • Lee has now recorded four points through the first three games, becoming the first Eagle to do so since Hedda Ornberg did it from October 20-November 3 in 2024.
  • Olivia Lowe and Kennedy Harmon each scored the first goals of their collegiate career in MSU's 2-0 victory over Brescia (Ky.)
  • MSU tallied 41 shots against Brescia (Ky.) on Aug. 16, tying the school record for most shots in a single game. The Eagles previously recorded 41 shots against rival Austin Peay in October 2002.
  • The Eagles held Brescia (Ky.) without a shot in their 2-0 victory on Aug. 16, marking the first time MSU has held an opponent without a shot for an entire game since defeating North Alabama, 2-0, in the 2021 season/home opener.
  • Lee is the first Eagle to have assists in back-to-back games since Kate Larbes on Oct. 8 & 15, 2023. 
  • Lee assisted on two of the first three goals that the Eagles scored this season, both off corner kicks. Both assists mark Lee's first two points of her career.
  • The Morehead State offense is averaging 1.5 goals per game on an average of 18.67 shots per contest, ranking 36th nationally in the latter category.
  • MSU has now shut out three of the last five opponents dating back into the conclusion of the 2025 season. 
  • Hannah Burke is one assist away from moving into the top-10 in school history.
