MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A day after earning the Pioneer League Freshman of the Week accolade, Morehead State wide receiver
Cross Watson has been named the best freshman in the nation this week as he earned the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week honor.
A 6-0 wideout from Campbellsville, Ky., the former Taylor County High School standout broke out big time with a 132-yard, three-touchdown effort in the Eagles' 75-24 win over Kentucky Christian.
He is the first Eagle since current teammate
Bryce Patterson to garner a weekly national award. Patterson was the FedEx Ground National Freshman of the Week in 2023.
Watson, held without a catch in his first career game against Ohio Dominican, made a splash Thursday as his first career catch was a 60-yard touchdown from
David Parsons. Later in the first quarter, he hauled in his second career pass, this time a 25-yard touchdown. Watson capped off the touchdown trio with a 40-yard goal line pass from Patterson later in the contest.
In the first two weeks, Watson is the FCS's top man in yards per catch at 33.0.
Watson and the Eagles are on the road this week, traveling to No. 15 Austin Peay for a 5 p.m. ET Saturday contest.
