MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.— The Morehead State women’s basketball team won its fourth straight road game Sunday, holding on to win 58-57 at Robert Morris. The Colonials had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but missed a free throw with 0.2 seconds left. The Eagles improve to 9-4, while RMU fell to 5-5.
The Eagles led 54-44 with 3:54 remaining, but the Eagles could not capitalize on their free throw chances. RMU rallied to cut the Eagle lead to only one. RMU got its chance after the Eagles turned the ball over in the final five seconds. Kristine Silaraja went to the line with the opportunity to tie, but missed her first charity toss. Her second shot was good, but the Eagles in-bounded the ball as the clock went to zeroes.
Robert Morris had previously only been defeated 12 times in the last four years at home and has been to the NCAA Tournament two of the last three years.
“Hopefully this goes a long way. It was just a great effort and I am ecstatic,” said coach Mike Bradbury. “The first half, they were in a two-three zone and we hit some shots, but then they went into a one-two-two zone and we just could not solve it. In the second half, Tiffany Hamilton made shot after shot and Chynna [Bozeman] hit some shots, so I couldn’t be happier. This was a great win on the road.”
Bozeman led the Eagles with 21 points, while Hamilton scored 11 – all in the second half. Ashar Harris had eight points and seven rebounds along with a career high five assists in a career best 36 minutes of action, while Deja Watson grabbed eight boards as well. The Eagles also forced 18 turnovers, scoring 17 points off RMU mistakes.
For the game, the Eagles shot 42 percent, including hitting 57 percent (13-of-23) in the final half. The Colonials did out-rebound MSU 39-33. MSU hit eight three-pointers.
RMU got four players in double figures, led by Silaraja with 12. Angela Pace and Yohanna Morton scored 11 each.
Morehead State grabbed an early 15-3 lead as they held Robert Morris without a field from the 19:01 mark of the opening half to the 10:29 mark. The Eagles fortunes were reversed as they went on an eight-minute, 20 second drought themselves minus a field. The Colonials rallied to take their first lead at 17-16 and then held a 28-24 lead at the break. Despite being saddled with three fouls, Bozeman scored 15 first half points.
The Eagles shot only 31 percent in the first half, but RMU was limited to only 33 itself.
Morehead State returns home to host Toledo on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
