Women Fall to Toledo, 77-61

MOREHEAD, Ky. -
Junior guard Chynna Bozeman scored 19 points, but the visiting Toledo Rockets proved to be too tough Tuesday night for the host Morehead State women's basketball team. The Rockets shot 53 percent and scored 46 second-half points en route to a 77-61 win over MSU.

The Eagles fell to 9-5 to finish their non-conference portion of the schedule.It marked the first non-conference winning record since 2005-06. Toledo moved to 9-3.

Toledo was stout in all aspects of the game as they shot 45 percent (29-of-65), had 20 assists, 12 steals and out-rebounded the Eagles 41-34. 

A 20-6 second half run proved to be MSU's undoing. Trailing just 38-33 with 16:10 left after a Tiffany Hamilton three-pointer, the Eagles saw Toledo outscore them 20-6 over the next six minutes to lead 58-39. The Rockets built as much as a 23-point margin (71-48) with 5:19 left.

Bozeman led the Eagles with her 58th career game in double figures. She struggled behind the arc though, hitting only 1-of-8. As a team, MSU - the nation's leading team in terms of three-pointers attempted - was 7-of-22. Overall, the Eagles shot 38 percent (21-of-56).

Hamilton also reached double figures with 10 points. Freshman forward Ashar Harris pulled down a game high 10 rebounds, including five each on offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Courtney Lumpkin handed out a team best six assists, and Ashley Martin picked up eight rebounds.

Toledo was led by Naama Shafir, the first female Orthodox Jew to be on an NCAA Division I scholarship. She had a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists. Courtney Ingersoll scored a career high 23 points, while Tanika Mays dumped in 15 and Melissa Goodall tallied 11. The Rocket bench outscored MSU's bench 31-16.

Both teams had extreme difficulties with ball control. MSU turned it over 22 times and forced 20 Toledo turnovers.

Morehead State never led in the game, although it kept the contest close in the first half. MSU trailed 21-18 with 7:30 left in the opening half after a Bozeman jumper. But, the Rockets opened up their largest first half lead by going on a 10-3 run. At the 1:21 mark, UT led 31-21 and led 31-23 at the half.

Morehead State hosts Austin Peay Saturday, Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU. It's Blackout Johnson Arena and fans wearing black apparel will have the opportunity chance to buy a general admission ticket for only $1. The concession stands will feature Pepsi products, hot dogs and popcorn for $1 as well.
