MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State’s women’s basketball team used a pair of 14-1 runs – one in each half – to cruise past a shorthanded Southeast Missouri team 75-37 Thursday night at Johnson Arena. The 37 points was the lowest allowed by an MSU team since the NCAA era began in 1981-82.
MSU improved to 13-6 and 6-1 in the league, while SEMO fell to 5-10 and 2-4 in the OVC. With Eastern Kentucky's 10-point loss to Eastern Illinois tonight, the Eagles moved into sole possession of first place in the OVC. EIU is now 5-1.
Chynna Bozeman led a balanced Eagle scoring stat sheet with 15 points, while Tiffany Hamilton netted 13, Tiffanie Stephens tallied 12, and Ashley Martin – getting just her third start of the year - scored in double figures as well with 12. MSU was able to effectively clear its bench with more than seven minutes left in the game, giving the key players a chance to rest.
“We had a great three days of practice this week, and it was nice to be able to give our key players a chance to rest,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “We still had a lot of intensity tonight even though the game was in our favor.”
SEMO, which had already lost leading scorer Jasmine White for the season, was also playing with without third-leading scorer Lauren Sharpe. The Redhawks shot just 29 percent for the game and scored in the 30s for the second straight game. Monica Miller had eight to top the Redhawks.
The Eagles and Redhawks were tied at 6-6 with 17:22 remaining in the first, but MSU went on its 12-0 run to push ahead 18-6 after a pair of free throws by Bozeman.
The Redhawks were only able to cut the lead down to nine (21-12), and then the Eagles outscored the visitors 14-1 during the next five minutes to go on top 35-13. The Eagles largest lead of the opening 20 minutes came during the break when they were ahead 40-17.
In the second half, the Eagles started with another 14-1 scoring barrage to climb ahead 54-18. The onslaught continued throughout much of the second half as the Eagles led by more than 40.
MSU hit 13 three-pointers on 33 attempts and out-rebounded SEMO 43-34. Hamilton nearly had a double-double with a team high nine rebounds. The Eagles also only had seven turnovers.
Morehead State will host Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m.
