MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women's tennis team is set to begin the 2010 Spring season this Sunday, Jan. 17 in Louisville. The Eagles will play Bowling Green State at 10 a.m. and host Louisville at 4 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
MSU is coming off an 11-10 season in 2009. The Eagles were 3-6 in the OVC but lost four matches by 4-3 margins. MSU returns six players, including number one singles player Madeleinne Antero who was 10-10 in singles play last season. Also returning is Lauren Delaney who was 11-9 in singles and 14-6 in doubles.
Alexandra Rydberg played mainly at number four last season and went 11-7 in singles and 12-6 in doubles action. Newcomer Alix Young should provide a needed boost in the lineup. The transfer from the University of Houston saw tremendous success in Conference USA last year.
Bowling Green was 12-7 in dual matches last year and 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Three key senior members of that squad, however, are not in this year's lineup. MSU and Bowling Green have only ever met three times on the court, and the last meeting was way back in 1987.
Louisville finished 2009 ranked 39th nationally in the ITA rankings. The Cardinals were 16-8, including a 7-0 sweep of MSU on Jan. 16. Mandy Brown is currently ranked 13th in the region to begin this season.
