LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Morehead State women's tennis team opened its 2010 season Sunday at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Eagles dropped a 6-1 match to Bowling Green and fell 7-0 to the host Cardinals.
"We played well in some spots, and some spots we need to improve," said head coach Kevin Fulton. "Overall, though, I think this can be a really good team this season."
Against the Falcons, sophomore transfer Alix Young won her first singles match as an Eagle, defeating Katia Babina 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) and number two. Freshman Kayla Tuscany hung in with Sam Kintzel at number three for the first set, taking it to extra points before falling 7-5 and 6-0.
At number one, Alexandra Rydberg fell 6-1, 6-1 to Christina Chiricosta. Maddy Eccleston defeated MSU's Lauren Delaney 6-2, 6-1 on the fourth court, and Alix Lakow surrendered a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Jade Johnson at number five. Rounding out the lineup for MSU was freshman Brooke Helms who fell 6-1, 6-4 to Katie Grubb.
In doubles, the Falcons won all three matches to go up 1-0 in the match. The closest match came at number two where Tuscany and Delaney fell 8-7 (4) to Babina and Johnson. Rydberg and Young paired at numner one but fell 8-3 to Chricosta/Eccleston. At number three Catherine Butts and Helms dropped an 8-4 contest to Jessica Easdale and Kintzel.
The Cardinals defeated MSU in straight sets in all six singles matches. Rydberd battled Sarah Miller tough on court one before falling 6-4, 6-4. Tuscany gave Amelia Harris a run at number three before taking a 6-2, 6-4 defeat. Young lost 6-3 in the first set at number two against Mandy Brown and then dropped a 6-0 set in the second frame.
In doubles, the Eagles lost 8-2 at numbers one and three and 8-3 on the second court.
The Eagles' next match is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 at Marshall at 2 p.m.
