Free Throws Spur Second-Half Comeback Win At TSU

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—
A furious second-half rally, spurred by 29 made second-half free throws, led Morehead State's women's basketball team to a 76-65 comeback OVC win at Tennessee State Thursday at the Gentry Center.

The Eagles were 36-of-42 from the line for the game, including 29-of-34 in the second half when they outscored the Lady Tigers 57-37. Chynna Bozeman hit a school and Ohio Valley Conference-record 17 free throws in 17 attempts. She also established a school record for consecutive free throws made, with 19, including two from the Eastern Kentucky game.

Bozeman finished with a game-high 30 points, also a career high for the junior. It was the 43rd game in school history with a 30-point scorer and the first 30 point effort since Tarah Combs' game at Jacksonville State on Jan. 19, 2008. 

MSU improved to 15-7 and 8-2 in the OVC. Only seven other MSU women's basketball teams since 1983-84 have won 15 or more games.

The Eagles trailed by as much as 12 points before a late rally tied the game at 42 with 11:01 left. MSU then went on its free-throw barrage to pull ahead by as much as 12. In the last 11 minutes the Eagles hit 22 charity tosses.

Courtney Lumpkin, who did not score in the first half, had 16 points in the second half, 10 off of free throws. Tiffany Hamilton had 11 points and Ashar Harris finished with 14 rebounds.

The Eagles trailed by nine at halftime after shooting just 17. 2 percent from the field, hitting five shots, two of which were free throws. Chynna Bozeman scored 10 of the Eagles’ 19 points, swishing two triples and four charity tosses.

Meredith Stafford scored 22 points to lead the Tigers. Nikki Rumph and Obiageli Okafor each had 11 points.

The Eagles won despite shooting a season worst 27 percent from the field (17-of-62). MSU hit six treys on 23 attempts. The Eagles also out-rebounded the Tigers 49-41. TSU entered the game as the OVC's leading rebounding team.
