CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.— The Dunn Center was chilly, so Chynna Bozeman and the rest of the Eagles decided to heat things up .
Bozeman scored a career-high 37 points, drilling a school-record tying nine 3-pointers to lead Morehead State to a 88-68 win over Austin Peay Sunday afternoon. It was only the second time this season MSU has tallied 80 points. Bozeman’s point total ranked second on MSU’s list of high scoring games all time, coming in only behind the 41 by Bev Smith and Amy Kieckbusch.
The Eagles improved to 16-7 overall and 9-2 in the OVC while the Lady Govs fell to 8-14 and 7-4 in the league.
“She (Chynna) was outstanding today,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “She played extremely well offensively, and we worked to get her open shots so she could knock them down. But, today we had great focus and we were dialed in. We knew our assignments and we executed.”
Tiffanie Stephens added 15 points and Courtney Lumpkin had 11. Stephens also dished out a team high and career best six assists. Tiffany Hamilton tallied 10 for the Eagles, who shot 56.4 percent from the field, including 65.2 percent from long range.
The Eagles also grabbed six more rebounds than the host team, 39-33. Deja Watson added nine rebounds and scored eight points.
MSU had two players in double figures in the first half, led by Bozeman, who swished eight shots, including five from long range to score 22 first-half points. The Eagles hit 67.9 percent from the field on 19-of-28 in the first half and 9-of-14 from 3-point range to take a commanding 53-31 lead.
Morehead State opened on fire, scoring nine straight points after Peay’s Ashley Herring started the game with two free throws. The Eagles pushed the lead to double digits seven minutes into the game on Bozeman’s first 3-pointer. A triple by Stephens got the lead out to 18, but the Lady Govs staged a rally, scoring nine straight to cut the MSU lead to nine. The Eagles quickly got eight of those points back courtesy of six straight by Deja Watson. The first half lead got as high as 24 before settling at 22 at the break.
The Lady Govs never got any closer than 20 points – the final margin – in the second half. MSU built as much as a 30 point lead.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but Friday’s winter storm forced the one-day postponement.
The Eagles return home for an OVC contest versus Jacksonville State Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
