Women's Basketball Sets Win Records against UTM; Will Face Seventh Seed Murray State Tuesday

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Morehead State women’s basketball placed four players in double figures as the Eagles cruised to a 76-50 victory over UT Martin in the 2009-10 regular season finale at Johnson Arena.

The Eagles improved to 21-9 and finished 14-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The 21 wins tied the school’s NCAA-era (1981-82 on) record for wins in a season, while the 14 OVC wins set a school single season record. The victory also assured MSU of the best two-year win mark in school history at 38.

It was the sixth straight victory for MSU over UTM and all have been by more than 15 points. Despite the loss, the Skyhawks finished the year 10-18 and 8-10 in the league after winning only seven total games the last two seasons.

Senior Tiffanie Stephens led the Eagles with 17 points, while fellow senior Tiffany Hamilton scored 15. Sophomore Courtney Lumpkin tallied 13, and junior Chynna Bozeman scored 11. Senior Connie Buchanan pulled down a team high and career high 10 rebounds.

UTM was led by Darnisha Lyles with 17 points, while LaBrica Ward tallied 10.

The Eagles outrbounded the Skyhawks 47-28. Bozeman and Lumpkin led the team with five assists as MSU dished out 18 helpers. Ward led all players with six assists.

MSU shot 44 percent for the game and hit 11 of 26 three-pointers. UTM was held to a 4-for-19 effort from behind the line.

The Eagles opened the game with a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes. The Skyhawks answered though with a 7-0 run to take its first lead 10-9 with 14:05 left.

The Eagles countered with a 10-2 run of their own to push ahead 19-12. Bozeman drained her first three-pointer and Stephens buried two triples.

MSU then continued to build upon its first half lead as Bozeman drained a shot from four feet beyond the three-point arc at the top of the key for a 28-16 Eagles lead at the 6:27 mark of the opening half. It didn’t stop there. Stephens and Bozeman added two more from distance and the margin ballooned to 18 (36-18) at the under-four media timeout.

MSU held a 40-22 lead at the half, shooting 47 percent in the half.

The Eagles built their margin out to 26 with 15:58 remaining in the game after an Ashley Martin free throw and the lead pushed to nearly 30 late in the contest.

The second-seeded Eagles host Murray State, the seventh seed, in the OVC Tournament first round at Johnson Arena Tuesday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m.
