MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State opened Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Southeast Missouri State. SEMO used an eight run seventh inning to pull away from the Eagles in game one, winning 23-10 before
Cameron Flynn hit two home runs and MSU held off a late Redhawk push to win game two 12-11.
The Redhawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game one behind a run in the second, three in the third and five in the fifth.
The Eagles failed to get the bats going at the beginning of the game as SEMO starter Kyle Gumieny held MSU scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when #J.D. Ashbrook# belted a bases clearing double to make the score 8-3 in favor of SEMO.
MSU pulled within three in the sixth when Flynn hit his first of three home runs, a solo shot to right and
Luke Bainer drove in a run with a single to left.
That was as close the Eagles would get however as SEMO used an eight run seventh inning to pull away for good. The inning was aided by three Eagle errors.
Flynn and Ashbrook went 3-4 with 4 RBIs in the game, each hitting a solo home run and a bases clearing double.
MSU jumped all over SEMO starter Logan Mahon in the nightcap, ripping the lefthander for eight first inning runs and chasing him from the game after only recording two outs. The Eagles would go on to score two runs off reliever Nick Thomas to plate 10 runs in the inning.
Flynn and Lucas Bainer each went yard in the inning that made the score 10-1 after one.
SEMO got five runs back in the top of the second to pull within four and forcing coach Jay Sorg to go to the bullpen early, bringing in
Josh Schneider to replace starter
Quentin Morgan.
Flynn’s third homer of the day, a two run shot, in the bottom of the fourth made the score 12-6 and proved to be the winning runs as SEMO would mount a late charge.
Schneider shut down the Redhawks for 3.1 innings, allowing just one run before giving up three in the sixth. Schneider allowed three earned runs over 4.0 innings and picked up his sixth win of the season.
Then things got really interesting in the bottom of the seventh as SEMO put the tying run aboard at first with two outs and Michael Adamson at the plate. Adamson took a
Trey Smith offering and lined it past a diving
Travis Redmon into the gap in right center field. Kenton Parmley was waved home from first, but the relay from Ashbrook to
Drew Lee to catcher
Eric Bainer was in time to get Parmley at the plate to end the game.
Flynn drove in five runs on his two homers to lead MSU while Lee,
Michael Fear, and Luke Bainer all drove in a pair.
The split moves the Eagles to 13-13 on the season and 1-1 in OVC play while SEMO now stands at 14-9 and 1-1 in conference.
The two teams are set to play the finale of the weekend set, weather permitting, tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Allen Field.
