Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight Defeating EIU 7-0

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State women’s tennis team continued their winning ways Sunday afternoon as they defeated Eastern Illinois 7-0 at the Wellness Center Indoor Courts. The Eagles have won five straight matches and are now 7-10 overall and 4-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

“We are starting to believe and that is very key for this final push in the conference schedule. We started out so flat today getting down on all three courts in doubles, but EIU came in here with a lot of energy and they really were in position to put the doubles point away, except we never stopped fighting.” said Coach Kevin Fulton.

At number one doubles Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney won an exciting match against EIU’s pair of Whitley and Dibbs 9-7. In the two spot Alix Young and Alexandra Rydberg won 8-6 over Huck and Egan. EIU picked up a win in the three spot as Brooke Helms and Kayla Tuscany couldn’t overcome Brooks and Frey 8-6. Winning two out of three, the Eagles took an early match lead 1-0.

“Alix Young, Alexandra, Lauren and Madeleinne played solid tennis getting us the point, but it was the freshman Helms and Tuscany that fought from 1-6 down to just come up short 8-6, that really sparked the team.” said Fulton

In singles action the Eagles once again for the second straight day won every match one through six. At number one Alix Young won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 and at number two Rydberg was victorious 6-2, 6-4. Tuscany defeated Brooks 6-4, 6-1 in the three spot and at number four Antero won 8-2 against Whitley. Delaney bested Frey 8-4 and rounding it out for MSU was Helms who beat Egan 8-2.

The Eagles will be back in action on the road at Eastern Kentucky on March 30.
