MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State broke or tied several single game records as they slugged their way past SIU Edwardsville by a score of 24-14 Saturday afternoon at a windy Allen Field.
Travis Redmon homered three times,
Andrew Deeds homered twice as MSU belted a record-tying eight home runs in the game. The Eagles also recorded a school-record 29 hits in the game and
Drew Lee tied the school record for at-bats in a game with 7.
MSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings thanks in large part to a grand slam by
Michael Fear in the bottom of the second. The long ball was Fears fourth homer of the season.
The Cougars (7-18) would battle back to tie the game at 9-9 after scoring three in the third, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth.
MSU (16-14) then exploded for a seven run bottom of the fifth. Redmon led off the inning with his second home run of the game and
Daniel Pugh followed with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center.
Cameron Flynn then drove in a run with a single down the left field line and
Luke Bainer plated a run when he hit into a fielder’s choice. #J.D. Ashbrook# finished the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line.
SIUE pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 16-13, but the Eagles put the game out of reach by scoring eight more runs in their final three innings to claim the victory. The late innings spurt included a five-run eighth where Redmon and Deeds homered in the same inning for the second time in the game, after also both going yard in the bottom of the third. Deeds blast, his sixth of the season, was a towering blast that knocked the pollen loose at the tip-top of the trees in right-center.
Trey Smith picked up the win in relief of
Quentin Morgan.
Hunter Hewitt pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one run on one hit on a day when balls were falling in everywhere.
Every Eagle batter recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Redmon who batted 5-6 with four RBIs on his three home runs. Fear also totaled four RBIs, while Pugh and Flynn each tallied four hits.
MSU and SIUE conclude this weekend's series with 12:00 game tomorrow.
