CAPE GIRADEAU, Mo. – The women’s tennis team continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon as they defeated Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri 6-1 at the Class Act Family Fitness Center. With the win the Eagles improve to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in OVC action. With the loss SEMO drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
"The girls put alot of effort into today's match and were able to take what we have worked on in practice and apply it during their matches," said coach
Kevin Fulton. "We really stepped up our game today and are getting closer to our full potential. We are looking forward to playing at Western Kentucky tomorrow."
The Eagles started hot this afternoon as they swept the doubles in dominating fashion. At the one spot senior’s
Madeleinne Antero and
Lauren Delaney defeated Nikole Novikova and Elizabeth Nyenwe 8-5 and in the two position
Victoria Cran and
Jessica Montemayor won big 8-1 over Laura Garcia and Ashton Hartley. Rounding it out for MSU was
Alix Young and
Alexandra Rydberg who downed Lauren Schaper and Sarah Pettigrew 8-0.
The Eagles kept it rolling into the singles matches as five MSU players came away with a victory. At number one Young defeated Novikova 6-3, 7-5 and at number three Antero was victorious over Garcia 6-0, 6-1. Cran won 6-0, 6-0 over Hartley at number four and Montemayor smashed Schaper 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth spot. Rounding it out for the Eagles was
Brooke Helms who beat Pettigrew 6-1 who retired in the match.
MSU has now won three of their last four matches, outscoring their opponents 20-5.
Morehead State travels to Bowling Green, Ky., Sunday Feb. 20 to battle the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
