MOREHEAD, Ky. – True Grit isn’t just another John Wayne movie.
The Morehead State women’s tennis team used some true grit in their 4-3 victory over non-conference foe Duquesne Sunday afternoon at the Wellness Center.
The Eagles found themselves in a hole early after dropping the doubles point. MSU got a win in the two spot as the talented tandem of
Jessica Montemayor and
Victoria Cran defeated Judy Li and Maddie Bittner 8-3. The Eagles dropped matches in the one and three spots.
Madeleinne Antero and
Brooke Helms were upended at one by Sam Noble and Megan O’Sullivan 8-3 and
Alix Young and
Alexandra Rydberg lost in the three position to Ana Mungo and Tara Majdalani 8-3.
"I thought our girls played their tails off today. They put together an impressive effort and were able to use their experience from our tough schedule at the beginning of the year to persevere in this match," said coach
Kevin Fulton. "Our MVP today was
Alexandra Rydberg she played incredible in the two spot and beat a very worthy opponent. I am proud of our team and I am excited to get to our next challenge."
Morehead State got wins at two, four, five, and six in singles to get the come from behind victory over the Dukes. At number two Rydberg won a tough battle over O’Sullivan 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6) to get the Eagles on the board. Young suffered a setback in the one position after she lost a hard fought match 6-7(7), 7-6(9), 7-5 to Mungo. Antero was defeated at number three by Noble 6-4, 7-6(3) to give Duquesne their third point. The Eagles were not deterred and won at every position the rest of the way. Cran downed Li 6-4, 6-4 at number four and Montemayor conquered Majdalani 6-4, 7-5 in the five spot. Rounding it out for MSU was
Lauren Delaney who beat Alex Assaf 6-2, 6-3.
The Eagles captured their fifth straight win which improves their overall record to 6-7.
MSU will be back in action March 16 at home versus Walsh University.
