MOREHEAD, Ky. – The women’s tennis team suffered a heart breaking 4-3 defeat to Chicago State Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at home in the Wellness Center.
“We battled hard today, this was a great team and they played well. This match will definitely make us tougher down the road as we enter conference play in a couple of weeks,” said coach Kevin Fulton. “We are looking forward to our day off tomorrow and we can’t wait to get back to work on Tuesday.”
The Eagles put themselves in a bit of a hole early as they went down 1-0 after losing two of three in doubles. In the one spot Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney went back and forth with Rosalina Tejoprayitno and Dian Mayasari, but couldn’t hold on and lost 8-5 and in the two position Jessica Montemayor and Victoria Cran lost a very close match 8-6 to Peggy Moore and Rosalia Tejoprayitno. Both matches could have gone either way.
In singles the Eagles got three wins, which put them in a very good position to win. MSU got wins at five and six by Montemayor and Helms due to default and in the four spot Cran won huge in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. The Eagles suffered set backs in the two and three positions as Alexandra Rydberg lost 6-4 after she retired in the match and Antero was downed 7-5, 6-4 in a close match. The match was tied 3-3 going into the final match as Alix Young was battling Mayasari. Young won the first set 6-2, but then lost a very tight second set 7-5. In the third set, she ran out of gas and was downed 6-1 in a heart breaker.
MSU will return to action Saturday Feb. 12 at home in the Wellness Center against Georgetown College (Ky.).
