MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State women's tennis team came up a point short against Eastern Kentucky in its home finale on Tuesday at the Wellness Center Indoor Courts. The teams split the singles matches, but EKU claimed the doubles point to win 4-3.
The Eagles fell to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the league, while EKU moved to 11-10 and 3-3 in the OVC.
The Lady Colonels won at nos. 1 and 3 doubles to clinch the first point. At no. 2, MSU's Victoria Cran and Jessica Montemayor won an 8-3 battle against Mryiam Mhirit and Milena Poffo. MSU lost 8-5 at no.1 and 8-3 on court three doubles.
In singles action, the Eagles got wins on all the even courts while EKU claimed victories in the odd-numbered spots. EKU eventually clinched the match with its fourth point when Poffo defeated Cran 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at no. 5.
Madeleinne Antero won in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at no. 2 against Mhirit. Montemayor also swept her match, besting Saioa Oscoz 6-3, 6-3 at no. 4. Brooke Helms outlasted Esmira Gheisary 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 on court six.
Young fell in a tight battle at no. 1 to Jessica Albuquerque, 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (2-7), 4-6. Anouk Faure got past Rydberg 6-3, 6-4 at no. 3, and Cran lost the three-setter at no. 5.
The Eagles will play their final two regular season matches this weekend in Nashville. MSU plays host Tennessee State at noon Sunday and then will conclude a suspended match against Murray State that day as well. The OVC Championship, in Paducah, Ky., will be held on April 15-17.
