MOREHEAD, Ky. – Alexis Garrett, a standout tennis student-athlete from Las Vegas, Nev., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Morehead State.
Garrett, who attends Durango High School, will join the Eagle women’s tennis team this Fall.
"I am very excited to get Alexis here at MSU. She is a tremendous talent who will be a focal point in our lineup as we look to take the next step and win the OVC Championship," said coach Kevin Fulton. "Alexis has excellent work ethic and is a quintessential team player and will bring energy and excitment to our team."
She only played one season of high school tennis for DHS, but Garrett was crowned the Nevada singles state champion in 2009-10. She also won the region title that year as well. Garrett was awarded the Pancho Gonzalez Award as the most promising tennis player in the state, and she was honored as the Nevada Rookie of the Year. She also won the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Nevada Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
On the junior circuit, the left-handed Garrett has overcome injuries to be ranked in the top 250 in her age division. In 2006, she defeated the top-ranked player in the 14-year-old division. She has also won matches against three top-75 players in the 18-year-old age division. In all, she has won six tournament titles in USTA play.
A superb student as well, Garrett is slated to graduate in the top 15 of her class of nearly 500.
