CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri's women's tennis team won the first five singles matches after dropping the doubles point to hand the visiting Morehead State Eagles a 5-2 defeat Saturday at the SEMO Tennis Complex.
The Eagles dropped their fourth consecutive match to fall to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. SEMO improved to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in league battles.
MSU took a 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. At number one, juniors Victoria Cran and Brooke Helms won 8-2, while MSU senior Alix Young teamed with freshman Alexis Garrett to win 8-5 at number two. Senior Jessica Montemayor and freshman Shilpa Naruka squeezed past their opponents 8-7 (7-4) on court three.
In singles, Naruka was the lone Eagle to post a win as she blanked Laura Garcia 6-0, 6-0 at number six. Garrett and Cran each went three sets in their matches but each fell in the final set.
The Eagles are set to close the OVC regular season next weekend as they host Murray State Saturday and Austin Peay Sunday.
