MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 4-1 victory over Belmont Friday at the EAGLE Center.
MSU has now won five straight conference matches dating back to 2014. The Eagles are now 4-5 in 2015, while the Bruins are 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.
"I am so proud of this team's effort today," Head Coach Kevin Fulton said. "Our experience and maturity is starting to show. These women have been putting a lot of effort into practice the last two weeks, and it showed today."
The hosts claimed the opening point with doubles victories on the first two courts. At No. 1, sophomores Andrea Leblanc and Hayley Wild got the better of Lindsey Whitehead and Kendall Warren, 8-1. On court two, senior Dominique Chante-Mclean and junior Ayaka Terashi topped Abbie Mather and Lauren Von Eeckhoudt, 8-3. Match three was unfinished.
In singles, MSU was triumphant Nos 1, 2 and 5. On court one, Leblanc won her fifth consecutive conference match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Whitehead. At No. 2, Terashi ousted Von Eeckhoudt, 6-2, 6-2. Wild also won her fifth straight OVC battle, topping Jenna Krakau, 6-1, 6-1. Belmont's lone win came at No. 3 where Warren beat Chante-Mclean, 6-2, 6-0.
"Andrea is showing why she is one of the top players in this league," Fulton added. "Hayley Wild stepped up big today, and Ayaka is starting to hit a good stride and playing very good tennis."
Morehead State hosts Tennessee State Saturday.
