McGuff's selection by Twins gives Eagles 3 draft picks

MOREHEAD. Ky. – Morehead State senior right-handed pitcher Patrick McGuff was selected Saturday in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins organization.

He becomes the 29th athlete in the history of the program to be taken in the MLB Draft and just the second ever selected by the Twins. Pitcher Brett Roberts was a fourth-round pick by the Twins in 1991.

MSU has now had multiple draft picks in back-to-back seasons with pitcher Matt Anderson being selected Friday by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 10th round and pitcher Tyler Keele selected earlier Saturday in the 15th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kane Sweeney (New York Yankees) and Brandon Rawe (Miami Marlins) were picked in 2015.

It also marks the first time since 1983 that the MSU program has had three draft picks in the same season.

"First and foremost I'm really excited and happy for these guys. They've worked very hard to get to this opportunity and are well deserving," said MSU head coach Mike McGuire. "It's a great honor for us as a program to have multiple draft picks in back-to-back years. It speaks volumes to the caliber of players we are putting on the field now.  But, it is also proving that we have become a must-see program for pro scouts."

McGuff, a native of Hamilton, Ohio, pitched the last two years for the Eagles after transferring from Sinclair (Ohio) Community College.

"Pat really came on as a senior and has blossomed into a guy deserving of this opportunity," McGuire said. "I'm very happy for him."

McGuff served a variety of roles on the pitching staff, appearing in 18 games in 2016 and starting eight. He finished with a 4.73 ERA and was 5-3. He fashioned 63 strikeouts in 59 innings. Opponents only hit .260 against him.

His top start of 2016 came on April 29 against Austin Peay. In an 11-1 victory, he went a career-best eighth innings and struck out five while allowing just the one run. In the OVC Tournament versus Southeast Missouri, McGuff tossed 4.1 innings in relief and made seven SEMO hitters whiff.
