Women's Hoops Open OVC Play Hosting LIttle Rock Tuesday

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State's women's basketball jumps into Ohio Valley Conference play when they host Little Rock Tuesday in Johnson Arena, in the opener of a women's/men's conference doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. ET. The game can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network with Tom Lewis on the play-by-play and analyst Wes Holland. The game can be seen on ESPN+ with Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin on the call.
 
Both teams enter conference play coming off losses to Power Four conference teams: Morehead State lost at Notre Dame last Thursday 97-48. The Eagles were led by Kate Dike with 11 points. MSU managed just 32% shooting from the floor and were forced into a season-high 24 turnovers by the tenacious Notre Dame defense, resulting in 31 points for the 19th-ranked Irish.
 
Little Rock was beaten at Oklahoma 103-48. The Trojans were led in scoring by Jordan Holman and Mya Cotto with 11 points apiece. Oklahoma dominated the glass 53-33 and forced 22 Trojan turnovers leading to 32 Sooner points off turnovers. Little Rock finished shooting 25% (14-16) from the floor for the game.

NOTABLE
  • Morehead State leads the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 28.7 three-point attempts per game. That ranks 13th in the country in NCAA Division I. The Eagles are hitting 28.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is 10th in the OVC.
  • Morehead State is averaging 8.1 three-point shots made per game, which is second in the OVC. Lindenwood leads the OVC averaging nearly 8.7 made treys per game. Violet McNece leads MSU averaging 2.25 treys per game (4th in OVC) and Anja Ekstrom with 2.11 three-pointers per game (5th in OVC).
  • MSU ranks 6th in the conference averaging 64.3 points per game. Little Rock ranks 9th in scoring at a 59.7 points per game clip.
  • The Eagles have run hot and cold at the free throw line so far this season. Last Thursday at Notre Dame, MSU hit just eight of their 14 free throws (57%). Last Sunday at Louisiana, Morehead State went 16-21 (76%) from the charity stripe, their second-best performance of the season. The Eagles are hitting 34% from the line, ranking 9th in the OVC.
  • Kate Dike was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week last week. The grad student hailing from Kiev, Ukraine, posted career-highs 35 points and 12 rebounds in the Eagles' 61-54 win at Louisiana on December 7, for her third career double-double. In Morehead State's last four games, Dike has averaged 19.5 points per game.
  • Dike posted her first double-double of the season on November 22 against USC-Upstate with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She just missed one on November 30 when she posted 18 points and nine boards against Marshall.
  • Dike leads MSU averaging 13.6 points (12th in OVC) and 6.2 rebounds per game (12th in OVC).
  • Dike leads Morehead State hitting 38% (12-32) from three-point range. Last season she did not attempt a single trey.
  • Ekstrom broke out two weeks ago against Murray State, posting a career-high 23 points. The junior from Spanga, Sweden just missed one shot on the night, going five for six from three-point range and eight of nine from the floor. She also hit both of her free throw attempts.
  • Three Eagles are perfect from the charity stripe so far this season: Landon Forbes (9-9), Ekstrom (6-6) and Josefine Enander (4-4)
  • Laura Toffali is second on the club averaging 12.2 points per game (20th in OVC) and 5.5 rebounds per game (14th in OVC).  The Italian ranks second in the OVC averaging 2.8 steals per game.
  • Toffali posted her first double-double of the season on November 26th against Eastern Kentucky, posting a career-high 24 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.
  • Marie Sepp leads the Ohio Valley Conference averaging 6.1 assists per game. That ranks 17th in the country in Division I. The Eagles rank 4th in the OVC averaging 13.8 assists per game.
  • This game marks the last one between Little Rock and Morehead State as Ohio Valley Conference foes. The Trojans will be joining the United Athletic Conference next summer along with former OVC members (and current members of the ASUN) Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay.
SCOUTING THE TROJANS
  • Little Rock head coach Steve Wiedower is in just his second season as the skipper of the Trojans, but he spent the previous 15 seasons on the Little Rock staff under head coach Joe Foley. Wiedower carries on the Trojan tradition of a formidable non-conference schedule: the Trojans have taken on Arkansas, Arizona State and Oklahoma in their build-up to conference play.
  • The Trojans are led by Jordan Holman who averages 18 points per game, ranking third in the OVC. She also leads Little Rock averaging 5.1 rebounds per game. She has scored 30% of the Trojans' points this season (162 of 537).
