Soccer Returns Home Seeking Win Against SIUE

MOREHEAD, Ky
. –-Morehead State aims for a much-needed win against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the Eagles host the Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. ET at MSU Soccer Field. The game wlll be streamed on ESPN+.

MSU currently sits at 5-7 following the team's loss at Lindenwood, the only conference match its played to this point.

"I think we've built some resilience this week that should help us going into the weekend," said Head Coach Paul Cox. We've got a determined group to bounce back and get three points."

Morehead State is coming off a 3-0 loss to Lindenwood. 

Lindenwood's first goal came In the 19th minute, Lindenwood strung together three terrific passes in MSU's defensive half. Mackenzie Compton tapped a pass to Sami Roggenkamp in stride, who paused before playing it backward to Kaylee Conoyer. Conoyer then slipped the ball past Allie Lammers and into the left side of the net, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles' best chance to score was in the 28th minute, Eagle junior Ashton Lynam lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out and sent a shot toward the top-left corner of the goal, but Ritter made an unbelievable save to keep the Lions ahead, 1-0.

Just two minutes and 22 seconds into the second half, Anna Johnson sent a cross in front of the Eagles' goal that was cleared by MSU's Carly Gilbert However, Gilbert's header fell directly to Samantha Steele, who capitalized with an absolute strike past Lammers to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Finally, In the 83rd minute, Peyton Johnson cleared the ball from Lindenwood's own 30-yard line, sending it all the way down the field. Lammers came out of the goal to clear the ball, but misplayed it, leaving Compton alone in front of an open net. Compton calmly tapped the ball in to extend the Lions' lead to 3-0.

Morehead State fell to 5-7 (0-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference), and has now dropped four of the last five.

SIUE enters with a 3-3-3 record (1-0 in the OVC) under Head Coach Derek Burton, who served as assistant coach for the very first MSU women's soccer team. The Cougars are used to playing in high scoring games, leading the OVC in goal scored (16) and sitting third in goals allowed (19).

The cougars are averaging 1.78 goals per game on 11.4 average shots, while allowing 2.11 goals per game on an average of 9.9 shots. 

MSU is averaging 1.17 goals per game on an average of 12.9 shots, while allowing 1.33 goals per game and an average of 13.5 shots per game.

NOTABLE:

  • Ashton Lynam scored in back to back games (Sept. 17 against Alabama A&M, and Sept. 20 against Bellarmine), becoming the first Eagle to do so since Hedda Ornberg scored in four straight games in Oct.-Nov. of 2024.
  • Morehead State leads the Ohio Valley Conference in shots (155) and shots on goal (66).
  • Natalie Lentine was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week following her first career goal (against Mercyhurst) and first career assist (against Chattanooga) on September 8th.
  • Morehead State scored in 10 of the first 11 games, marking the first time in which its accomplished that since 2015, when the Eagles also scored in 10 of the first 11 games.
  • Burke notched her ninth career assist as an Eagle on Sept. 3, against Merchyhurst, putting her in sole possession of ninth place in program history.
  • Charlotte Lee is tied for second in the OVC in assists (3).
  • Walton is second in the OVC for shots on goal (13). 
  • The Eagles have scored 14 goals this season from 10 different goal scorers. 
  • Eight of the Eagles 10 who have score this season have scored their first collegiate goal. 
  • Lee's seven points in the first six games of the season was the first time a Morehead State Eagle has accomplished that feat since Ashley Ritchie in the first six games, 10 years ago in 2016.
  • Allie Lammers' 18 combined saves against Eastern and Northern Kentucky are the most saves in a two-game span since Kayla Landman recorded 21 (14 and 7) against Purdue Fort Wayne and Murray State on 9/29/2019 and 10/4/2019.
  • MSU scored in each of its first four games of the season, the first time it has accomplished the feat since 2015.
  • Lee recorded four points through the first three games, becoming the first Eagle to do so since Hedda Ornberg did it from October 20-November 3 in 2024.
  • The Eagles held Brescia (Ky.) without a shot in their 2-0 victory on Aug. 16, marking the first time MSU has held an opponent without a shot for an entire game since defeating North Alabama, 2-0, in the 2021 season/home opener.
